NetSuite supports varied business and business processes. While playing a huge role shaping a business in and out, NetSuite focusses on returning profitable value to organizations by streamlining their Revenue Recognition processes and bringing maximum revenue to them.

While each industry works on standard revenue generation mechanism of reducing cost to increase profits – here are different ways of revenue recognition each business follows to exceed their gains by using NetSuite ASC 606 and IFRS 15:

1. Software and Technology Industry

Tech industries usually follow a subscription model and entertain scheduled overtime billing. Using ASC 606, NetSuite allows these scheduled invoicing and billing mechanisms to promote revenue allocations over the contract period.

2.Construction and Real Estate Industry

Revenue is recognized in bits and pieces and the construction industry and usually follows progressive billing mechanisms. Again, using NetSuite, construction companies can create projects and milestones to recognize revenue, ensuring revenue is recognized in line with work completed and costs incurred.

3. Manufacturing and Retail Industries

Manufacturers recognize revenue at one time. This could be before or after delivery depending on what is stated in the contract. Retail industries recognize revenue at point of sale only. However, they bring in discounts and return policies which need to be incorporated in the deal. NetSuite helps both these sectors by having Point in Time revenue recognition and also has item level discounts enabled in NetSuite. Thus, it supports both sectors to streamline their revenue activities.

4.Telecommunications Industry

Telecommunication Industry includes mobile and internet plans. These are further broken down into prepaid and post-paid. They are also subject to one-time and recurring billing models based on quantity and period. All these varied subscription plans can be developed in NetSuite along with their unique revenue recognition models.

5. Hospital and Hospitality Industry

Both working on per bed and per room availability; revenue for these can be scattered and is dependent on services provided. NetSuite helps these industries by giving them the liberty of per day revenue calculation and recognition using NetSuite’s Revenue Recognition rules.

6. Financial Services Industry

This covers banking and other related financial sectors.

Financial services firms often recognize revenue over time particularly for advisory services, management fees and other long-term contracts. The timing for this may vary based on the specific terms of the services provided.

Thus, using NetSuite revenue recognition and recording can be an easy process to streamline operations and accounts receivable department to a large extent, making things simpler for the financial well-being of a company.

An ERP Implementation is a multi-stage business process that organizations go through to digitalize and streamline core financial and other departmental operations to the maximum extent with the objective of making things easier, faster and more reliable.

The purpose of this post is to understand NetSuite ERP, and the NetSuite ERP Implementation methodology with a simplified approach. This approach will identify focus points which can help organizations plan and prioritize different NetSuite ERP implementation tasks, deploy resources effectively, and track progress to ensure a successful implementation.

The standard implementation project life-cycle can be divided into four distinct phases and it is very important to understand the purpose of the activities involved in each stage in order to ensure a fruitful experience.

netsuite implementation process

Phases for a Seamless NetSuite ERP Implementation

1.  Engage

The Engage phase includes initial activities required to begin with the project and is primarily focused on detailed requirement gathering from the customer. Including the initial kick-off sessions and briefings, the Engage phase is aimed at providing insights to the customer regarding the project life-cycle, the product features and key take-way from this phase is for the consultants to have an in-depth understanding of the customer’s business requirements and expectations from NetSuite.

It involves conducting process area wise Personalization Sessions to assess and gather the business requirements which will enable consultants to configure the system accordingly. It is very important that relevant resources are assigned to attend these sessions to ensure that the business requirements are communicated properly and completely, and a clear set of expectations can be defined.

Another aspect of these sessions is to identify if all the requirements can be fulfilled using the standard system functionalities or there is a need for customization to provide for certain required functions. To ensure success in this phase, it crucial to ensure that the process area wise business requirements are communicated clearly to the consultants by the resources most well equipped within the customer organization.

2. Drive

The Drive phase includes a detailed demonstration of the NetSuite processes referred to as Process Walkthrough Sessions. Based on the information and requirements gathered in the Engage phase, the consultants demonstrate a configured NetSuite Account in a Sandbox (Test) Environment using a sample set of data.

It is important to give due consideration to the sample data being used while conducting the process walkthroughs as the sample data should be relatable with the current business processes in order for the customer to properly understand and analyze the configured system and address any concerns. Based on the feedback provided by the customer organization during this phase, necessary actions are taken and required configurational and set up level modifications are performed to fine tune the system.

3. Enable

After completion of the Process Walkthroughs and required modifications, the Enable phase begins. This is where the most participation is required from the customer organization as it includes conducting process area wise User Acceptance Testing (UAT). This involves engaging the customer’s team in performing detailed test transactions based on real time scenarios and data in the configured Sandbox Environment.

The objective of this phase is to provide the customer with the ability to completely test a fully configured system and ensure that all the requirements have been mapped and the system behavior is as expected in all aspects including the recording of transactions and generating reports as well.

The enable phase is also where the customer’s team gets equipped with all the knowledge and trained to perform routine business transactions to facilitate a smooth Go-Live. It is recommended that all users participate in this activity as per their role which allows a more detailed testing and validates the configured system. As a result, any existing issues are highlighted and resolved before going live.

4. Convert

This is the final phase that includes making the Production Environment ready for Go-Live, importing complete legacy data in NetSuite, performing a system readiness check and providing Post Go-Live support to the customer. It is advisable to provide the complete legacy data in a timely manner to avoid any delays that may cause transaction backlog. Any issues discovered after the Go-Live are addressed as part of the Post-Go Live support as well as any assistance required in performing routine transactions is provided.

To summarize, each phase has its own set of objectives and the key is to deploy appropriate resources for each implementation task while tracking the progress efficiently to ensure a successful implementation.

NetSuite Customer Data Management

In the dynamic landscape of B2B operations, managing customer records efficiently is paramount for seamless transactions and robust business relationships. Within the realm of NetSuite, a leading cloud-based ERP solution, consultants often encounter a critical decision point: whether to utilize a combination of customer and address records or to opt for a more sophisticated approach involving customer and sub-customer records. This choice significantly influences how businesses map out their Sold-to & Ship-to relations and impacts various operational facets. In this comprehensive exploration – NetSuite Customer Data Management – we’ll delve into these two schools of thought, accompanied by key questions, considerations, and the consultant’s role in guiding clients towards an informed decision.

NetSuite Customer Data Management
NetSuite Customer Data – Proposed structures for Sold-To and Ship-To relationship

Key Questions to Ask

  1. Distribution Centers (DCs): Do you refer to customer shipping addresses as Distribution Centers?
  2. Ordering from Addresses: Do personnel at these addresses typically place orders themselves?
  3. Sales Rep Interactions: Are your sales representatives interacting with employees at these addresses for terms and pricing negotiations, or is that solely conducted with individuals at headquarters?
  4. Autonomous AP Teams: Can the Accounts Payable team at these addresses decide independently to pay for orders shipped to them?
  5. Credit Limits per Address: Do you intend to enforce a specific credit limit per shipping address for your customers?

Decision Making

A “YES” answer to any of the questions above strongly suggests the necessity of implementing a Customer & Sub-customer structure within NetSuite. Let’s delve into the pros and cons of this approach:

Pros of Sub-customer Records

✅ Flexibility: Sub-customer records provide enhanced flexibility, allowing businesses to leverage out-of-the-box NetSuite features to meet specific requirements. Whether it’s custom pricing, credit limits, or transaction rules, sub-customers offer a granular level of control.

Learn more about NetSuite workflows

✅ Customization: Businesses can tailor settings and configurations at the sub-customer level, ensuring finer control over operations. This level of customization enables businesses to accommodate diverse customer needs and streamline processes accordingly.

✅ Detailed Reporting: Sub-customer structures facilitate detailed reporting, enabling businesses to gain deeper insights into customer-specific activities and transactions. By segregating data at the sub-customer level, organizations can generate comprehensive reports that drive informed decision-making and strategic planning.

Cons of Sub-customer Records

❌ Data Management Overhead: Working with sub-customers requires additional effort in terms of data management and maintenance. Businesses must invest time and resources into accurately categorizing and updating sub-customer records to ensure data integrity and consistency. Proper NetSuite Customer Data Management is crucial in this regard.

❌ Invoicing Complexity: There might be increased complexity during the invoicing process, potentially necessitating more effort from the finance team. Managing multiple sub-customer accounts and associated billing details can introduce challenges in generating accurate invoices and reconciling accounts receivable.

❌ Payment Collection Challenges: Sub-customer structures could introduce complexities in payment collection processes, requiring careful management to ensure smooth transactions. Businesses must implement robust payment collection strategies and closely monitor receivables to mitigate risks associated with sub-customer transactions.

Consultant’s Role

As consultants, it’s imperative to guide clients through the decision-making process by thoroughly evaluating their specific needs, operational workflows, and long-term objectives. By asking the right questions and considering the pros and cons of each approach, consultants can empower clients to make informed decisions that align with their business goals.

In conclusion, the choice between utilizing customer and address records versus customer and sub-customer records in NetSuite warrants careful consideration. While sub-customer structures offer greater flexibility and functionality, they also entail additional complexities that must be weighed against the specific requirements and capabilities of the business. By providing insightful guidance and support, consultants can help clients navigate this decision effectively, ensuring optimal utilization of NetSuite’s capabilities to drive operational excellence and business growth through efficient NetSuite Customer Data Management.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions with regards to managing B2B customer records in NetSuite.

What is Expert-as-a-Service, and how does it play into the OdeCloud business model with NetSuite?

According to Wikipedia: Expert-as-a-Service (ExaaS) is an online synchronous and asynchronous delivery model of human consulting and/or automated knowledge transfer. OdeCloud largely utilizes ExaaS to carry out its NetSuite consultant services.

Similarly to SaaS (Software as a service), the concept of ExaaS comes from the remote nature of processing data and/or providing service. The user of an ExaaS accesses the service through a webpage, VoiP, IM, etc. or any related mobile app. Typical ExaaS providers are consultants, lawyers, doctors, teachers, etc.

Fifteen years ago, the concept of SaaS (software-as-a-service) redefined the technology landscape, followed by other similar concepts such as PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) and IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service).

In the same manner, the concept of ExaaS will redefine the future of talent acquisition and how companies build their knowledge capital.

PREVIOUS POST – OdeCloud NetSuite Services: The Right Talent at The Right Time

The most noticeable aspect of ExaaS today is proliferation of freelancing platforms like Upwork, Upcounsel or Toptal. These platforms became extremely successful almost overnight.

Toptal, for example, was founded in 2010. Their business model centered around providing highly skilled software engineers to large corporate businesses. By November 2015, Toptal was ranked the #1 fastest growing talent marketplace in North America by the consulting firm Deloitte.

Today, Toptal deals with large organizations like Airbnb, as well as small startups with no employees, and it still provides the top 3% of talents in software engineering and finance.

Why are these platforms so successful in the talent acquisition marketplace?

The main reason for their success is the exponential increase in the demand for technical expertise, which is in direct response to a higher complexity of our technology ecosystem. These platforms feature two major elements interacting through an interface.

The first element is the exponential increase in the demand for experts, as mentioned above. To guarantee the attractiveness of the platform, there needs to be an exponential increase in incentive offers for experts.

In a report published in 2013 by (OECD), it was stated that the future of growth, especially in advanced economies, will increasingly depend on developing knowledge capital. The report referred to this as “A knowledge-based economy”. That being said, it is an unrealistic goal for a company to try to keep its staff’s knowledge level up-to-date on every piece of technology out there.

On the other hand, for most midsize organizations, paying the overhead costs to work with consulting firms and staffing agencies is a waste of money when all they truly need is the knowledge of the individual consultant.

RELATED POST – NetSuite Administrator: Why Do You Need One?

The current economic environment and the race for talents has opened amazing opportunities for individuals with specific skillsets to set up shop and offer their knowledge directly to the end customer. These freelancing platforms provide the interface, enabling smooth and effective interactions between the organizations seeking talent and the talented expert.

ExaaS offers great opportunities for startups and midsize companies with specific needs to contract outstanding talents directly — all without having to pay the overall costs of hiring that person.

ExaaS, combined with SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS, are the key factors enabling midsize organizations to play in the same field as enterprise-level organizations and win those battles against companies 10 times their size. As a startup or midsize organization, could you contract a senior-level NetSuite Consultant (the top 3%) with experience in managing complex IT landscape, to administer your NetSuite account on demand?

Absolutely.

It is the most effective way to get outstanding NetSuite talents without going through the arduous process of hiring. But it raises an important question that I will elaborate on in an upcoming post: How do you develop a Knowledge Capital for your organization when the most critical part of your information management system is outsourced?

PREVIOUS POST – What is NetSuite?

A more complex and advanced NetSuite technology platform

There is no doubt that the Netsuite client base will keep growing over the 20% annual rate in the next couple of years, especially with the scale provided by Oracle. Oracle has not only provided a market scale to Netsuite, but also a technology scale.

In summary, NetSuite will offer more and more advanced features with more depth in industry verticals, which sounds awesome for NetSuite customers, but it also raises 2 important questions:

      • Does your organization have the right tech-minded thought leader who could recommend up-to-date industry leading practices and cutting-edge Oracle NetSuite solutions?

        • Does your organization have the right technical skills to setup and build on these advanced and more complex features available to all NetSuite customers?

In the context of a rapidly evolving NetSuite technology platform, the expertise you need to maintain and optimize your ERP lies far outside the skill-set of a typical NetSuite administrator or developer. Most importantly, it is highly unlikely you would find all the business skills, technical expertise and thought leadership abilities required for this position in a single person.

This is exactly why as an organization, you should explore the opportunities provided by Expert-as-a-Service, or in this case NetSuite Admin-as-a-Service. Leverage this model to effectively and timely source the NetSuite skills you need, not only to maintain your platform in good standing but to expand its capabilities to meet the evolving needs of your customers and employees.

Is OdeCloud NetSuite Services the right solution for you?

      Cheers!

      Osar

Prior starting my career as a NeSuite professional I worked in the position of Materials and Manufacturing Manager at Mountz Torque, a Silicon Valley mechanical engineering company. In this position I manage all aspects of manufacturing standard products, prototypes and specials including any outsourcing of products or sub-assemblies. Demonstrated progression to higher level positions within the company with more challenging responsibilities reporting directly to the CEO and owner of the company. Oversee the acquisition, movement, control and storage of material and inventory. Provide leadership of the purchasing department including warehouse practices and processes.

My combined experience in both NetSuite and business operations enables me to provide the depth and breadth of expertise to help optimize and scale supply chain operations and manufacturing execution.
