Digital nomads — look no further than OdeCloud for all your long-term freelancing needs.

Digital nomads are individuals who, often due to the technological nature of their job or career, freely roam the world and move from place to place while still being able to access and complete their work.

But as any freelancer would know, the freelancing lifestyle can be fairly unpredictable, and it can be difficult to plan for lengthy trips around the globe when work loads and finances change rather often.

PREVIOUS POST — Just In Time Inventory: Keep Inventory Stocked Without Overspending

OdeCloud CTO and co-founder Vanielle Lee is one of these digital nomads. Having already visited over 20 different countries over the course of her relatively young lifetime, she currently works out of Seoul, South Korea as a freelance software engineer.

According to her, seeing so many of her close friends traveling the globe is what really inspired her to make a significant life change. Working a conventional 9-to-5 job as a Silicon Valley techie was great financially, but she knew she needed to change the direction of her career if she was going to achieve a much more desirable work-life balance.

“As a millennial of this generation, that 9-to-5 just wasn’t working out well — especially when I was maybe on the train scrolling through my Instagram, seeing my friends traveling to like, Bali,” Vanielle said. “I said, ‘Hey, c’mon, that could be me!’

“So I wanted to find a way to make this possible, of how I could fit in what I love to do, my job as a software engineer, and also, how do I end up getting hired by a company to get there?”

She initially attempted to search for a company that would immediately benefit her work-life balance as a software engineer, but eventually came to terms with the fact that there are few businesses that are actually built to allow for such needs.

It was at that point that she began her work as a freelance software engineer, which provided her with more time to do what she wanted, but unfortunately cost her the financial security of a full time job. She recalls splitting her time between finishing up work for clients and frantically scrolling through freelancing platforms like Upwork in hopes of securing next week’s paycheck.

Happening across Osar Iyamu and her current long-term gig with OdeCloud, she considers herself very lucky to now be provided with more opportunities to “explore the world,” as well as the “comfort and security of being in a 9-to-5 job.”

OdeCloud, she says, removes the usual unpredictability that comes with being a freelancer, allowing her to much more accurately plan out her time.

“I could eventually go to maybe somewhere like Singapore, or maybe even go to somewhere in Brazil, and know that I still have the same amount of income next week — while also still having a stable work load coming in.”

“It’s hard to plan for the future when the short term is still so unpredictable; but the main plus of being a part of OdeCloud is it gives me a lot more leeway to be able to think (about) the future.”

Additionally, she appreciates the freedom that OdeCloud has given her to create, allowing her to realize her dreams of creating a platform aimed at helping other freelancers find long-term gigs.

In my next post, I’ll detail just how Vanielle came to be involved with OdeCloud, as well as how she knew the company would be such a great fit for her desired lifestyle.

NetSuite-related content is all the craze here at OdeCloud, and Ahad Arain can’t wait to join in on the fun.

NetSuite-related content is a fairly new concept we’ve only started to explore here at OdeCloud, but it’s something that we hope will become the backbone of our ongoing initiatives to help grow our consultants’ expertise.

Now we already have a thriving community that has proven more than willing to reach out and help each other solve NetSuite-related issues and relay all the best practices. The issue is that much of that knowledge tends to be lost in the scramble, getting pushed into the archives of Slack.

PREVIOUS POST — How to Setup NetSuite Billing Schedules

With so much information going in and out, we often lose track of certain threads or end up seeing similar topics come up. In an effort to find a solution to this problem, OdeCloud has done its best to create more and more NetSuite-related content to help answer some frequently asked questions.

Now that NetSuite expert Ahad Arain is on board, we hope to ramp up our efforts and seize the opportunity to help NetSuite consultants and NetSuite clients everywhere.

“There are a lot of questions that are asked not just by freelancers, but even by clients on our website. I think that provides an opportunity for us,” Ahad said.

“If someone is asking that question either on our website or even internally in our channel or in our group, it hints to me that there’s a need — whether it’s a tutorial video or a session that we can have internally or some app that we need to develop to spread more broadly based on client requests.

“Whatever it is, I wanna make sure that we have a venue to be able to share those ideas and help both clients and our community alike.”

RECOMMENDED POST — Work Remotely and Travel the World: The Perks of Being a Freelancer

Ahad outlined his idea of starting a podcast to hopefully discuss more NetSuite-related content, as well as his intention to create more ways for clients to reach out to OdeCloud for expert NetSuite advice.

Noting that there’s already a good amount of NetSuite-related content to digest via the NetSuite Help Center or SuiteAnswers, the fact of the matter is that NetSuite clients often times have no idea what to look for or simply have a difficult time navigating and understanding all of that content.

“There’s a bunch of information that’s available on the NetSuite Help portal. It’s very, very informative for people like you and me and other people that are a part of this platform that are NetSuite experts; it’s very challenging for a client to digest that information,” said Ahad.

“There’s a lot of clutter, there’s a lot of stuff that they may not need.”

And that’s really where expert NetSuite consultants come into the picture — they’re there to help translate all that information, all that knowledge into actionable methods to help their clients.

RELATED POST — NetSuite Outsourced Manufacturing: A Comprehensive Guide

Ahad wants to take it a step further, however, hoping to develop NetSuite-related content aimed at assisting NetSuite clients who might not have the technical expertise of an OdeCloud consultant.

“I don’t know about you, but for me, if I were a client, I’d be much more adept to following a 2-3 minute video versus reading a 1-page, step-by-step instruction article where I may or many not know where to go.

“So I kinda wanna bridge that gap, make it easier for folks to be able to learn NetSuite, regardless of their background, regardless of whether they’re in finance or in accounting.

“You don’t have to be a NetSuite expert to do a lot of neat things in NetSuite that could make your day job a lot easier.”

SuiteWorld 2022 was an absolute success for OdeCloud thanks to the first ever Community Networking Event at the Elena Bulatova Fine Art Gallery in Las Vegas, NV.

Fresh off SuiteWorld 2022 in Las Vegas, NV this past week, we at OdeCloud are incredibly excited to have kicked off our new ANNUAL NetSuite community networking event!

That’s right — OdeCloud is absolutely thrilled to announce that based off the solid turnout for our networking event and the positive feedback we received from attendees, we will be making the OdeCloud NetSuite Community Networking Event an annual event to kick off the week at SuiteWorld.

Check out some of the highlights from that night in the post below, and be sure to like us on Facebook if you’re not already!

Event Recap

To quickly recap: OdeCloud held their first official NetSuite community meetup at SuiteWorld 2022 at the Elena Bulatova Fine Art Gallery in Las Vegas, NV. We had roughly 15-20 people drop in at various times throughout the evening, resulting in a number of new connections.

We were happy to meet with many longtime community members, and we were equally as happy to greet fresh faces. Thank you to everyone that came out to build their network and show their support for the OdeCloud community initiative. We hope to throw many more events like this in the future, so your continued engagement remains as important as ever.

ALSO — if you’re not following us on LinkedIn, make sure you do so now! We had roughly 30 or so people RSVP to our event posting on LinkedIn, so we would love to continue growing our following there. Here’s a highlight from the event via LinkedIn:

https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6980733377058390016

Future Event Plans

We understand that not everyone that RSVP’d was able to make it for one reason or another. We heard that many had difficulty finding the venue, some of whom were turned away by mall staff or security guards that were unfamiliar with the location. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and we will work to rectify that issue at our next event.

Additionally, we hope to make our next event more interactive and dynamic, so the community’s feedback is most welcome in this regard. We would love to implement ideas such as live OdePod sessions, live music from upcoming artists, NetSuite-related partnerships, and possibly even games or prizes.

We want to hear from you! What exactly would you like to see at the next OdeCloud community event? Should we hold more meetups outside of SuiteWorld, or is the one at SuiteWorld enough? Are you interested in having more virtual engagements more often, or do you prefer the occasional in-person appearances? Where and when should we throw our next celebration?

We’re delighted to share the future of OdeCloud with you! Please let us know what you think about the OdeCloud community in the comments below.

Until next time, OdeClouders!

freelancer working at home

Should I start as an LLC? A sole proprietorship? What’s this about an s corp and a c corp? I’m confused, so let’s work this out together.

Welcome back to our series “In the AM,” in which you follow me, Angelo Mendoza, on my path from independent freelancer to fully organized freelancing business! Last time we spoke, we discussed my past working as a sports writer and my inevitable transition to tech writer, laying the foundation on which we’ll build this new business.

I understand that I set up this post to be our opportunity to flesh out my business plan, but part of that process — as I learned from the Economic Development team in Fremont, CA — is figuring out how I want to structure my business. The choice came down to two clear options: Did I want to establish myself right off the bat as a limited liability company (LLC), or did I want to start my business as a sole proprietorship?

Speaking to other freelancers with their own DBA, the consensus is LLC. The reasoning for creating an LLC as opposed to a sole proprietorship was two fold: (1) an LLC provides personal liability protection, and (2) it allows for more flexibility when it comes to taxes.

Protect yourself before you wreck yourself

Serving as a formal business entity, an LLC essentially separates you from your business. As an owner in an LLC, you’re simply considered a “member,” of which there can be an unlimited amount. In layman’s terms, an LLC differs from a sole proprietorship in that the latter doesn’t separate you from your business. In a sole proprietorship, you are the undisputed owner.

Falling into debt in a sole proprietorship can be absolutely disastrous, as creditors are capable of taking your house, your car, and other personal assets. An LLC protects your personal assets from seizures relating to any business debt, making it very popular among freelancers.

Personally, my mother (also a business owner) was adamant I should file as a sole proprietor (like her). She explained that it was by far the easiest way to structure and the path of least resistance. For a person looking to immediately start their business, this would make sense.

However, I’m looking to make this more of a marathon; not a sprint. Time is my most valuable resource, but I’m in no rush. I figured we might as well do this the right way the first time around. But let’s move on to tax implications!

Death & Taxes!

We didn’t get too much into it at the time (which means I’ll likely be making a more in-depth follow up to this post in the near future), but from what I understand, an LLC allows for more tax flexibility because you become capable of filing as a sole proprietorship OR a corporation.

And that’s where the terms of “s corp” and “c corp” come into play! Both are different tax classifications available to LLCs, and each have their own implications. Put simply, an s corp seems to be the more popular choice considering it makes the owner/member exempt from federal corporate income tax; instead, the owner pays taxes on specific dividends.

Conclusion

Like I said, we can get more into tax implications another time, but I’m pretty set on starting out as an LLC as opposed to a sole proprietorship. That being said, I’m not ENTIRELY sure about HOW to get started with filing an LLC! There’s a few options out there that have come across my desk over the past couple days, such as ZenBusiness, Incfile, and Tailorbrands.

We’ll take a look at all three in my next post. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and be sure to comment below with your thoughts. Talk to y’all next time…In the AM!

No one really has any idea what they're doing...and that's ok!

I had always wanted to be my own boss. I just didn’t know where to start.

If we’re being perfectly honest, I’m STILL really unclear as to where I should start – and that’s probably the main reason why I’m going to be writing every step of this adventure down.

Maybe I’ll find some tips and tricks to share on my way to success, or maybe I’ll just completely crash and burn. Either way, I’m in for the journey, so I hope you are too.

To give everyone some context before we get into the weeds: I started writing my own blog back in 2011 on a little site called Tumblr. Building up a considerable following on both my blog and Twitter, I was eventually roped into writing sports pieces for a startup that eventually grew to be quite distinguished.

But it was with them that I got my first taste of being a freelance writer, and let me tell you: it tasted like ASS.

starting your own freelancing business

Back then, anything that had to do with freelance journalism was considered a poor career choice, and my first writing gig had only confirmed that. I unfortunately found myself having to work multiple minimum wage jobs to help support my dream of being a sports writer (albeit a severely limited and underpaid sports writer).

What I didn’t realize until late in my adulthood was just how much EVERY SINGLE BUSINESS valued good writing. So, I shifted gears and started looking at simple contract work, eventually signing a handful of long-term clients.

But with some clients now looking to scale back before 2023, the fountain of wealth has apparently dried up, and I find myself at a crossroad: Do I continue to seek out freelance gigs with more and more clients, or do I finally settle down and put roots down with a single business?

Naturally, I chose to try to get the best of both worlds and start my own business. And the best part about this: as a freelancer, I already have access to multiple CEO’s ready to share their respective perspectives (all of which I’ll share with you).

starting his own business

Which brings me back to my original question: Where do I start?

I suppose where you start actually depends on where you live, which in my case is Fremont, CA. Going to the official site for my city, they advise that I completely draw out my business plan to help determine any preliminary strengths and weaknesses.

We should also keep in mind that this brainstorming session can also be beneficial when looking for potential investors. Highly unlikely considering it’s not necessary for my particular business, but we’ll nevertheless note that for later.

Now that I know where to start, it’s all a matter of where to go from here. I know I have to register my business and get a business bank account. I know I have to start thinking about its legal structure and get business insurance. I also know I have to starting preparing for my initial tax report (which I’m already dreading).

But one step at a time; we’ll cross that bridge if or when we get there.

For now, let’s save that brainstorming session for our next go. Until then, see you next time… In the AM!

The post OdeCloud TV: Is billable time still relevant in consulting? appeared first on OdeBlog.

]]>

As the freelance economy continues to expand, the practice of billable time and hours continues to be a subject of debate among many longtime consultants.

We at OdeCloud have written numerous blog posts concerning the many problems associated with tracking billable time and hourly rates, focusing on the fact it simply doesn’t make sense for a freelancer to be paid less for efficiently completing a project.

Why should a person with years of expertise in a particular field be financially penalized for quickly completing a project? If I’m one of the few experts in the world that knows a simple solution to a complex problem, then how do I explain the true monetary value of my knowledge to a client?

In the video above, OdeCloud’s Osar Iyamu contemplates those questions, elaborating on why the billable time model is no longer appropriate in the field of information technology.

He also goes so far as to explain how relying on the billable time model can also hurt clients who would actually prefer a task to be done as efficiently and effectively as possible.

In conjunction, we’d also like to mention that we’ve previously made several attempts at suggesting alternatives to billable time and hourly rates, highlighting OdeCloud’s use of an “as a service” (aaS) subscription model to help better define the financial relationship between client and consultant.

Additionally, we’d be remiss to say there’s also a number of other considerable suggestions out there, such as long-term retainer fees, performance-based compensation, and project-based pricing (flat fee).

We’re sure a much more universal solution to billable time will come to light in the near future, but until then, please enjoy what is just our second episode of OdeCloud TV!

The post Agile vs. Waterfall: Which is Best for Your ERP Implementation? appeared first on OdeBlog.

]]>
Last week, a prospect asked me about the methodology that is normally used to implement NetSuite. With everyone nowadays talking about Agile, Sprints, and Releases, he didn’t see how those concepts would align with his company’s objective of being able to run their business effectively through NetSuite from day one.

And I completely understand his doubts.

You’d hear about the concept of Release mostly in the App or software development world, but rarely in ERP implementations.

And without going into too much detail, I’d say there should be more thought put into methodologies that involve project implementation before immediately choosing to implement Agile or stick to the more traditional Waterfall model.

But when it comes to ERP implementations, there is one thing you simply CANNOT skip over: DEFINING YOUR IMPLEMENTATION METHODOLOGY!!!

But guess what?

You don’t have to chose and stick to one specific methodology. You can mix them up to build the optimal approach for your implementation. Agile is now the most prominent methodology in the software world, but this doesn’t mean it’s the perfect fit for all types of IT projects.

ERP implementation is THE MOST CRITICAL IT transformation for an organization, and the bigger the organization, the greater risk of failure.

Unlike traditional Software development, the customers may not grant you multiple chances to get it right. A little bug in an interface, an hour of system failure can result in millions of dollars lost in revenue, so think twice before fully committing to Agile!

True consultant life story: I remember a mandate I had in a paper mill factory a few years ago. There was an error in the SAP Transportation module setup, which resulted in a mismatch of batch numbers assigned to trucks delivering tons of paper rolls.

Long story short, New York Times was on the other end as the customer, and my client had 5 business days to figure out the issue and solve it. Failure in this task would have likely resulted in the loss of a 5-year, multi-million dollar contract.

My team spent 16 hours a day — including a 12-hour night shift — to find and fix the bug, then manually reprocess hundreds of shipments. Then we spent the next 3 weeks — 12 hours each night — helping the factory workers find the missing rolls and directing the truck lifts to the right trucks.

So when is full Agile Methodology appropriate for a project?

I think we will all agree that in a B2B or large B2C organization, AGILE is NOT ERP friendly, but that doesn’t mean we cannot take inspiration from that concept. The key success driver of my ERP implementations is my ability to mix the Agile and Waterfall concepts together whenever it made sense.

This could be characterized as a hybrid implementation methodology. To describe it in few words, it is the ability to design, prototype, test, deploy and repeat this sequence of events in a short time frame while running a waterfall project.

If you’d like to hear more about my hybrid methodology, I’d be happy to hold a much more detailed discussion with you to see if this concept would make sense in your current or future NetSuite implementation.

Talk to you soon,

Osar

]]>
In December 2018, OdeCloud began releasing visual updates concerning the growth of its online community of world-class Netsuite experts via Slack.

And now that January 2019 has come and gone, we’re back with yet another infographic, and there’s obviously a few minor differences we’d like to point out!

Although it should be noted that our more professional channel of #allnetsuite remains our most popular by far, we’ve actually added a new channel to our list of top channels last month: #allintegration.

This channel is primarily used for sharing all the neat tips and tricks many of our experts have discovered over the years. We’ve continued to encourage each of our Netsuite experts to pass on their accumulated knowledge with the intention of creating an environment that fosters lifelong learning and casual networking.

Maybe you have a question concerning new Netsuite integration processes, or perhaps you’re simply looking to further develop your understanding of Netsuite in general; either way, #allintegration is the channel you want to be in if you’re aiming to better your skills as an expert Netsuite administrator.

Our #cool_listening channel surprisingly continues to be a staple of our online community, and both Osar Iyamu and Thierry Klesse have been central to building interest in that channel.

In addition, we have related channels such as #cool_events and #cool_places that we hope to promote a bit more in 2019.

Most importantly, we added five new Netsuite consultants, resulting in a grand total of 25 active users. As 2019 continues to get underway, we definitely expect that number to continue growing exponentially.

And while our goal continues to focus around building our community of Netsuite experts, we plan on inviting more of our customers into the mix soon.

As for overall engagement, we’ve remained pretty consistent, showing an expected bit of growth that coincides with the addition of five new Netsuite experts.

Our primary hope is to not just continue adding more community members, but to have more of them engaging with each other on a more consistent basis.

OdeCloud’s online community not only uses Slack to assist each other in their professional careers, but to share their personal lives with like-minded individuals.

You’ve all seen those crazy Silicon Valley startups! Why can’t an online community be just as fun?

Last week, we took a brief look at how OdeCloud’s online Slack community had grown over the past month, highlighting a 300 percent increase in active users. Those users take the time to help each other solve incredibly complex Netsuite problems that each of them had trouble solving alone.

This is exactly how OdeCloud’s infinite pool of knowledge and resources is meant to be utilized.

But just as our individual lives aren’t meant to revolve entirely around our careers, a great community isn’t there to just assist with work-related issues.

A great community shares in the collective experience of each other’s personal lives, expanding far beyond the limits of a strict, professional workplace. The OdeCloud community is no different, encouraging each user to share a bit of who they are outside of work.

Because let’s face it: We are more than what we do.

One way OdeCloud helps make things fun: The #CoolListenings channel, which is used to share music.

As seen in the infographic from our previous post, #CoolListenings is the most active discussion channel after OdeCloud’s more professional medium, #AllNetsuite. Community members provide some of their favorite tunes, showing off a diverse array of musical interests.

Aside from all the jams, the community has a #CoolEvents channel, which stays true to its namesake. Users can signal boost events they’re planning to go to, or they can simply share media they took from events at which they were present.

Just last month, OdeCloud CEO, Osar Iyamu, took a family trip to France, sharing pictures he took in the #CoolPlaces channel. He’ll often lead in the sharing, inviting others to events he organizes through his musical passion project, UnplugX, or posting pictures from some of his #Random adventures.

Like that one time he and Omar met international recording artist, producer and entrepreneur, Akon!

These are just a few tidbits that were shared with OdeCloud’s community via Slack. There are many more awesome things we’ve been up to.

As we continue to grow, we hope you take the chance to join us at one of our upcoming events and share in this fun community we’re building!

At OdeCloud, we’re building much more than just a generic freelancing platform — we’re building a community.

Two heads are better than one.

Building a brand is easier than ever. All it really takes is a click of a button.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen fast-growing brands such as Glossier, Groupon, and Copyblogger go from small-time online communities to renowned worldwide companies.

Following the path of online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay, a number of these companies now provide features for their members to distribute products or services as merchants, influencers, or consultants.

In the same manner, social media platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and Discord have given individuals the tools to potentially further those communities, blurring our borders and redefining communal proximity.

But what if the community as a whole WAS the product? What if the community’s collective expertise was the brainpower behind the actual service?

This is the idea behind OdeCloud’s community of freelance NetSuite experts. We serve the global demand for NetSuite admin services by providing a community of experts that act as a single entity.

As opposed to traditional freelancing platforms, OdeCloud eliminates the stress related to finding that one perfect contractor for a single Netsuite gig. In addition, companies working with OdeCloud would no longer have to worry about an individual freelancer lacking the bandwidth or expertise to support a fast-growing organization.

Essentially, the availability of a large pool of talent within the community provides the opportunity to offer a one-stop technology service. Companies could potentially outsource all technical functions to OdeCloud, preserving an internal business analyst role for facilitating team collaboration.

On the consultants’ end, gone are the days of freelancers having to look for gigs on their own. No more having to lower pay rates to better compete in the freelancing market. No more having to forcefully extend his or her bandwidth for the sole purpose of completing a single gig.

When choosing OdeCloud, companies essentially contract with OdeCloud’s community of consultants, who, in turn, are encouraged to assist each other to find the perfect solution to whatever issues may arise.

This focus on communal knowledge and assistance is not only there to help serve the customer, but it also helps create the environment freelancers need in order to promote healthy, long-term relationships and higher learning.

Generally, we at OdeCloud refer to this as community-based, crowdsourced consulting.

In conclusion, traditional freelancing platforms will always fall short in delivering quick and effective solutions to complex technological problems.

There’s a critical need for an on-demand expertise platform, but one that is designed and built to benefit fast-growing organizations and the long-term growth of the Freelance Economy.

This is where community-based, crowdsourced consulting has the advantage over a lone wolf contractor.

This is where OdeCloud comes in.

In our blog next post, let’s take this discussion a tad further and expand on how exactly the OdeCloud platform will go about pairing companies with their own “dedicated team” of consultants.
